- •• MAQ Nexus Quick Guide by Grant Gillespie
-
- Eventually you will have to read the TeleFinder User Guide. This will get you
- started, but not answer all your questions. That's why they write User Guides.
-
- • G E T T I N G S T A R T E D
-
- When you get the TF User programme you have to set-up a couple of things before
- you start.
-
- 1) The modem set-ups and "strings" -click Modem Setup button in dialer window
- and choose a modem like yours -consult your modem manual -choose Baud rate and
- check "Adjust BPS"
-
- 2) Pulse or Tone dial -try pulse first if the exchange doesn't respond, use
- tone. You may have to set modem audio to "on" for a while to hear what's
- happening.
-
- 3) Set the "receive folder" - this is where all the files you download will go.
- It looks like a disk icon on the bottom left of the screen. Just double click
- it and choose a folder to catch all the goodies.
-
-
- To LOG-ON to the BBS
-
- 1) Turn modem on. 2) Click Dial or Redial (some modems won't redial, but either
- button works OK). 3) Eventually you will get a "Successful Connection" and a
- welcome message. Close the welcome window and you see a Finder-like "desktop".
-
- This is not YOUR desktop it is the interface to the bulletin board, it is
- designed to resemble Finder so that you feel comfortable, but it will not always
- behave exactly the same as Finder. This is TeleFinder's way of reminding you
- that you are not in Finder - you are talking to another computer.
-
-
- I'm logged on, W H A T N E X T ?
-
- *Grant's rule - double click everything. Try all the menus. No harm will come
- to the pure of heart, Luke Skywalker.
-
-
- Down the right hand side you will see your mounted disks, Nexus' disks,
- Conferences and a mailbox or two. Double click on these to see what's inside.
- The trash is for deleting mail when you've read/saved it and for ejecting disks
- (like Finder).
-
- Across the bottom of the desktop you will see some icons for doing things. To
- begin with the only two you will need are the download icon (disk with arrow
- pointing down) and the send icon (with arrow pointing up). The rest you'll have
- to read the manual and experiment.
-
- There are two kinds of things to do on a BBS. You can
-
- • TALK (send/receive mail, participate in conferences, get help etc.) and
- •TRANSFER FILES (upload to the BBS/peoples' mailboxes or download to your
- machine).
-
- Transfers are graphical like Finder - open your disk icon and drag the file you
- want to upload to the Send icon at the bottom of the desktop / or open a BBS
- disk and drag a file to your disk or 'download folder icon' (bottom left).
-
- Mail is handled by the mail menu. The menu choices to experiment with here are
- 'Locate A User' and 'New Mail Form'.
-
- Locate a user will find any registered user of the BBS. You can 'SAVE' them to
- your address book (to make sending them mail easier) or get their private
- mailbox onto the desktop. The latter allows you to privately send them a file
- by dragging a file from your disk onto their mailbox. The former makes life
- easier when you ask for an new mail form...
-
- When you get a mail form, click on the "To" button to bring up your address book
- and you can choose a recipient from the list. Put in a subject and the text and
- click "Mail" and it will be sent.
-
- "Conferences" are those icons with "left and right arrows" on the right hand
- side of the desktop. Just keep double clicking until you get to the actual
- notices. Conferences are like a notice board that people can read, post and
- reply to notices posted by others. If you wish to reply privately to a message,
- click reply and instead of 'Post'ing it to the conference, 'Mail ' will send
- your reply to that person's private mailbox.
-
- Hope this has been some help in demystifying our club BBS.
